This breadcrumb schema generator creates BreadcrumbList JSON-LD for any page in a few clicks. Add each level of the trail, from your homepage down to the current page, with its name and URL, and you get a ready-to-paste script block with positions numbered for you. It’s for site owners, developers and SEOs who want Google to understand where each page sits in the site’s structure.
What Breadcrumb Schema Does
Breadcrumbs are the small “Home › Blog › Article” trails that show where a page sits in a website. Breadcrumb schema describes that same trail in structured data, so search engines don’t have to guess it from your URLs or navigation.
BreadcrumbList and ListItem
The markup uses the Schema.org BreadcrumbList type. Inside it, itemListElement holds one ListItem for each level of the trail. Each ListItem has three properties:
- position: the level’s place in the trail, starting at 1 for the top level.
- name: the label shown to users, such as “Blog”.
- item: the full URL of that level’s page.
Google’s documentation says the last item, the current page, doesn’t need an item URL. This generator follows that rule and only warns when an earlier level is missing one.
How Google displays it
Google uses breadcrumb markup to understand site hierarchy and to show a readable path in results instead of a raw URL. In 2025, Google simplified mobile results to show just the domain, so breadcrumb paths now appear mainly on desktop. The markup is still supported and still helps Google understand how your pages relate to each other.
How to Generate Breadcrumb Schema
The preview and code update live as you type.
Step 1 – Add each level’s name
Start with your homepage in the first row’s Name field, then the category, sub-category and finally the page itself. Use the same labels that appear in your visible breadcrumbs. Three rows are ready to start; click + Add level for deeper trails, or the ✕ button to remove a row.
Step 2 – Add URLs
Enter the full URL for each level in the URL field, including https://. The final level, the current page, can be left blank. If an earlier level has no valid full URL, a warning tells you which one needs fixing.
Step 3 – Check positions
You don’t have to type positions. The generator numbers each level in the order you list it. The Preview shows the trail as “Home › Category › Page”, so you can confirm the order before copying.
Step 4 – Copy and test
Click Copy to grab the complete <script type="application/ld+json"> block, or Download it as a file. Paste it into the page’s HTML, then run the URL through Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm it’s detected without errors.
Visible Breadcrumbs and Markup Together
Matching on-page trail
Structured data should describe content users can see. The best setup is a visible breadcrumb trail on the page plus matching BreadcrumbList markup, with the same names, the same order and the same URLs. If your markup says “Home › Guides › Schema” but the page shows “Home › Blog › Schema”, search engines get mixed signals.
Accessible breadcrumb HTML
Visible breadcrumbs should work for everyone. Wrap them in a <nav> element with aria-label="Breadcrumb", use an ordered list for the levels and mark the current page with aria-current="page". Separators like › are best added with CSS, so screen readers don’t announce them between every link.
Breadcrumbs for Site Architecture
Logical category paths
Breadcrumbs only make sense when your site has a clear structure. Each page should belong to one main category path that a visitor would expect. If you struggle to decide what the trail for a page should be, that’s often a sign your categories need tidying. An HTML Sitemap Generator can help you see the whole structure at once.
Internal links and crawl depth
Every visible breadcrumb is an internal link back up the hierarchy. That gives category pages a steady flow of links from the pages beneath them and gives crawlers a simple path through the site. Breadcrumbs work alongside menus and contextual links; they don’t replace them.
Breadcrumbs on WordPress
Theme vs plugin markup
Many WordPress themes and SEO plugins, including Yoast and Rank Math, can output breadcrumbs and BreadcrumbList schema automatically. If yours already does, you may not need custom markup at all. Use this generator for pages where the automatic trail is wrong, for custom post types, or for sites without an SEO plugin.
Avoiding duplicate BreadcrumbList
Before adding generated markup, check the page source or run the Rich Results Test. If you find an existing BreadcrumbList, either turn off the automatic version or skip the manual one. Two different trails on one page are confusing and can lead to warnings.
Breadcrumb Markup Mistakes
Wrong position order
Position 1 must be the top level, usually the homepage, and each level after it adds one. Reversed or skipped numbers break the trail.
Trails that don’t match the page
Markup copied from a template can describe the wrong category. Check every page type, not just one example.
Relative URLs
Use full absolute URLs like https://example.com/blog/, not /blog/. The generator warns you when a URL isn’t complete.
