Comma Separator: Free Online Tool
FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP
This comma separator converts a list with one item per line into a single comma separated line, and turns comma separated text back into a list. You can choose the delimiter, wrap each item in single or double quotes, remove duplicates and sort A to Z. It is a quick way to turn an Excel or Google Sheets column into values for SQL, code, tags, emails or keyword tools, without formulas. Paste your list and the result appears instantly. Everything runs in your browser.
How to Use the Comma Separator
Paste, choose a direction and copy.
Step 1: Enter or paste your input
Paste your list into the Input text box. For lines to comma list, put one item per line, for example a column copied from a spreadsheet. For the reverse, paste a single line like apple, banana, cherry. Empty lines and extra spaces around items are removed automatically.
Step 2: Choose your options
- Convert: Lines → comma list, or Comma list → lines.
- Delimiter: Comma, Comma + space (the default), Semicolon, Pipe, Tab or Space. In reverse mode, this is the separator the tool splits on.
- Wrap items in: Nothing, Double quotes or Single quotes. Quotes are added when converting lines to a list.
- Remove duplicates: keeps the first copy of each item and drops exact repeats.
- Sort A→Z: sorts items alphabetically.
Step 3: Copy, download or apply the result
The result updates as you type, with an item count and character counts. Click Copy or Download to save it as a text file. Paste it into your SQL query, code, spreadsheet, CMS tag field or wherever you need it.
What a Comma Separator Does
A comma separator is a tool that joins items from separate lines into one line with commas between them, or splits a comma separated line into one item per line. It saves time when moving lists between spreadsheets, databases, code and web forms.
Many tools want lists in a specific shape. A spreadsheet column gives you one value per line. A SQL IN clause wants 'a','b','c'. A tag field wants seo, marketing, tools. A keyword tool export might give you one long comma separated line that you want back as a column.
Doing this by hand is slow and error-prone. A missed comma or stray space can break a query or create a blank tag. Formulas like TEXTJOIN in Excel work, but take time to set up and are awkward for a one-off job.
This tool also cleans as it converts. It trims spaces around each item, skips empty lines, and can remove duplicates and sort in the same step, so the output is ready to use.
Custom Delimiters and Quotes
Different destinations expect different formats:
| Need | Delimiter | Wrap in | Example output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Readable list or tags | Comma + space | Nothing | seo, marketing, tools |
| CSV or code without spaces | Comma | Nothing | seo,marketing,tools |
| SQL strings | Comma | Single quotes | ‘seo’,’marketing’,’tools’ |
| JSON or JavaScript array items | Comma | Double quotes | “seo”,”marketing”,”tools” |
| European CSV | Semicolon | Nothing | seo;marketing;tools |
| Markdown tables or log formats | Pipe | Nothing | seo|marketing|tools |
| Pasting into spreadsheet columns | Tab | Nothing | Items in separate cells |
Tab is useful when you want to paste a row into Excel or Google Sheets and have each item land in its own cell.
If you need brackets, such as ('a','b','c') for SQL or ["a","b","c"] for a JSON array, generate the quoted list here and type the brackets around it. If an item already contains a quote character, escape it first; for JSON strings, our JSON Escape Unescape tool helps.
Converting Excel Columns for SQL and Code
A common job is turning a column of IDs, emails or SKUs into a SQL IN list:
- Select the column in Excel or Google Sheets and copy it.
- Paste it into the comma separator.
- Choose Lines → comma list, delimiter Comma, wrap in Single quotes.
- Tick Remove duplicates.
- Copy the result and paste it into
WHERE id IN ( ... ).
For numeric IDs, leave Wrap items in as Nothing, since numbers do not need quotes in SQL.
For code, the same steps give you array items. Choose Double quotes for JavaScript, JSON or Python string lists.
Very long IN lists can be slow or hit database limits. If you have thousands of values, consider loading them into a temporary table and joining instead. You can tidy the final query with the SQL Formatter.
Reversing CSV Strings Into Line-by-Line Lists
Choose Comma list → lines to split a single line into a column. Set the Delimiter to whatever separates your items: Comma for a,b,c or a, b, c (spaces around delimiters are ignored), Semicolon for a;b;c and Pipe for a|b|c.
Paste the result into a spreadsheet and each item lands on its own row. Remove duplicates and Sort work in this direction too, which is handy for cleaning messy tag lists or keyword exports.
Two things to know:
- In reverse mode, choosing Tab or Space splits on any whitespace, so items that contain spaces, like “keyword research”, are split into separate words. Use comma, semicolon or pipe for multi-word items.
- Quotes are not removed when splitting. If your list is
"a","b", the quotes stay. Use Find and Replace Text to strip them if needed.
This tool does not parse full CSV files with quoted fields containing commas. For those, open the file in a spreadsheet.

Pro Tips and Mistakes to Avoid
Checklist of best practices
- Remove duplicates before using lists in queries.
- Use single quotes for SQL strings and double quotes for JSON.
- Check the item count matches what you expected.
- Keep a copy of the original list.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
- Multi-word items split apart. You used Space or Tab in reverse mode. Switch to comma.
- Duplicates still showing. The duplicate check is exact and case-sensitive, so “SEO” and “seo” both stay. Change case first with the Case Converter.
- Trailing comma breaks code. The tool never adds one, so check your own edits.
- Quotes inside items. Escape them before wrapping.
