Duplicate Line Remover
FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP
A duplicate line remover deletes repeated lines from a list or block of text and keeps only the first copy of each. Paste your keyword list, email list, URLs or log lines into the tool above, choose whether to ignore case, trim spaces and drop blank lines, and the cleaned list appears instantly. You also see how many duplicates were removed and which lines repeated most, and you can sort the result or copy and download it as a text file.
What a Duplicate Line Remover Does
Lists pick up duplicates all the time. You merge keyword exports from three tools, combine email sign-ups from two forms, or paste URLs from several crawl reports, and the same entries appear again and again. Duplicates inflate counts, waste time and can cause real problems, such as sending the same email twice or submitting the same URL repeatedly.
A duplicate line remover treats each line as one item. It reads the list from top to bottom, remembers every line it has seen, and drops any line that matches one already kept. The first occurrence stays in its original position, so the order of your list does not change unless you ask for sorting.
The tool shows four counts: lines in, unique lines, duplicates removed and empty lines removed. A table lists the lines that were duplicated and how many times each appeared, up to the 50 most repeated. That table is useful on its own. It tells you which keyword showed up in every export, or which error fills your logs.
Nothing is uploaded. All processing happens in your browser.
How Lines Are Compared
Two lines are duplicates when they match exactly after the options you choose are applied. The two settings that change matching are ignore case and trim spaces. Both are on by default, because most real-world duplicates differ only in capitalization or stray spaces. Turn them off when every character matters, such as in code or case-sensitive identifiers.
Case sensitivity and ignore-case matching
With “Ignore case” on, “SEO Tools”, “seo tools” and “SEO TOOLS” count as the same line. The tool keeps the first version it meets, with its original capitalization, and removes the others.
Turn ignore case off when capitalization carries meaning. Passwords, product codes, file paths on some servers, and case-sensitive URL paths are examples where “Page” and “page” can be different things. With ignore case off, those lines are treated as unique.
For keyword lists and email addresses, keep ignore case on. Search tools usually treat keywords as case-insensitive, and the domain part of an email address is case-insensitive, though the part before the @ technically can be case-sensitive on some mail servers.
Trimming spaces and blank lines
With “Trim spaces” on, leading and trailing spaces and tabs are removed before comparing, and the output lines are trimmed too. That catches duplicates caused by copying from spreadsheets or web pages, where an invisible trailing space makes “keyword” and “keyword ” look different to a computer.
Spaces inside a line are not changed, so “seo tools” with two spaces still differs from “seo tools”. Use the Extra Spaces Remover first if your text has doubled spaces.
“Remove empty lines” drops blank lines completely and counts them separately in the stats.
How to Deduplicate a List in Three Steps
Paste your list. Put one item per line in the “Your list” box. You can paste from a spreadsheet column, a text file, a CSV column or a code editor.
Set the options. Keep ignore case, trim spaces and remove empty lines on for most lists. Choose a sort order if you want one: Keep original order, A → Z, Z → A or Shortest first.
Copy or download the unique lines. The cleaned list appears under “Unique lines”. Click Copy to paste it elsewhere, or Download to save unique-lines.txt. Check the duplicates table if you want to see what was removed.
The output updates as you type or change options, so you can compare settings quickly. Your original text stays in the input box, so you can undo a choice by changing the option back.
Common Uses for Clean Lists
Any task that starts with “combine these lists” ends with deduplication. A few cases come up constantly for marketers, SEOs, developers and admins.
Keyword lists and SEO data
Keyword research often means exporting suggestions from several sources, such as Google Search Console, keyword tools and autocomplete scrapers, then merging them. The combined list is full of repeats. Deduplicating gives you a true count of unique keywords before you group or prioritize them.
It also helps with URL lists for audits, redirect maps and disavow files, where a repeated entry is at best wasted work. After cleaning, sort phrases into themes with the Keyword Grouper.
Email, URL and log lists
Email lists merged from different forms or events often contain the same address twice. Removing duplicates before an import prevents double sends and keeps your contact count accurate.
URL lists from crawls, backlink exports and sitemaps overlap constantly. Deduplicate before building an XML sitemap or a redirect file.
Log files repeat the same error lines thousands of times. Removing duplicates shows the distinct errors, and the duplicates table shows which ones repeat most, which is often a faster way to find the main problem.
Preserving Order Versus Sorting Lines
By default, the tool keeps your original order and removes later repeats. That matters when order carries meaning: a ranked keyword list, a priority list, steps in a process, or log lines in time sequence.
Sorting helps when order does not matter and you want the list easy to scan. A → Z puts items alphabetically, using your browser’s language-aware comparison so accented letters sort sensibly. Z → A reverses that. Shortest first is useful for keyword lists, because it brings short head terms to the top and pushes long-tail phrases to the bottom.
Sorting happens after deduplication, so it never affects which copy is kept.
Online Tool Versus Excel and Command Line
Excel Remove Duplicates (Data tab) works well for spreadsheet data and can compare across several columns. It changes your sheet in place, so work on a copy.
Google Sheets UNIQUE returns unique rows in a new range with a formula, leaving the original untouched.
Notepad++ and other code editors offer line operations to remove duplicates, sometimes after sorting.
Command line tools like sort and uniq handle huge files quickly. Note that uniq only removes adjacent duplicates, so the list usually needs sorting first, which loses the original order.
This online tool fits the space between: faster than opening a spreadsheet, no install, case and space options built in, original order kept, and a report of what was removed. For files with millions of lines, a command line tool or a script will be faster than any browser.
Mistakes When Cleaning Duplicates
Leaving ignore case on for case-sensitive data. You can lose entries that only look the same.
Forgetting trailing spaces. With trim off, near-identical lines survive. Keep trim on unless spaces matter.
Deduplicating multi-column data as lines. If each line contains several fields, two rows with the same email but different names are not duplicates. Use a spreadsheet when you need column-level control.
Sorting a list that needed its order. Keep original order for ranked or time-based data.
Not keeping the original. Save the raw list before you replace it with the cleaned version.
Ignoring the duplicates table. A line that appears dozens of times may point to a bigger problem in your data source.
Near-Duplicates the Tool Will Not Catch
The tool matches lines exactly, after case and trimming rules. It will not merge lines that mean the same thing but are written differently: “seo tool” and “seo tools”, “https://example.com/” and “https://example.com”, “colour” and “color”, or “Pvt. Ltd.” and “Private Limited”.
Handle these with a normalizing step first. Use find and replace to standardize spelling or URL formats, or fix them in a spreadsheet. The Find and Replace Text tool works well for this.
Private Processing in the Browser
The duplicate line remover runs entirely on your device. Lists you paste, including email addresses or client data, are never sent to FHSEO Hub or stored on a server. Close the tab or press Clear and the data is gone.
Clean Data for Faster Work
Remove duplicates first, then do the rest of your cleanup in the same browser tab with the Duplicate Word Remover or Line Counter. See all the free text and SEO utilities in the FHSEO Hub free SEO tools collection.
