Duplicate Word Remover: Free Online Tool
FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP
This duplicate word remover deletes repeated words from any text, keeping only the first time each word appears. You can ignore or respect capital letters, or switch to removing only accidental back-to-back repeats like “the the”. It is useful for cleaning keyword lists, tag sets, product attributes and scraped text, and for catching doubled words in drafts. Paste your text and the cleaned version appears instantly, with a count of words removed. It all runs in your browser.
How to Use the Duplicate Word Remover
Paste, pick a mode and copy.
Step 1: Enter or paste your input
Paste any text into the Input text box: a paragraph, a keyword list, tags separated by commas or spaces, or a block of words from a spreadsheet. Line breaks are kept, so lists stay in shape. Clear empties the box.
Step 2: Choose your options
- Ignore case (on by default): treats “SEO”, “Seo” and “seo” as the same word, keeping the first one you wrote.
- Only consecutive repeats (“the the”): removes a word only when it repeats immediately after itself. Use this to fix typos in normal writing without touching words that are meant to appear more than once.
With neither change from the defaults, every repeat of a word anywhere in the text is removed.
Step 3: Copy, download or apply the result
The result updates as you type. The stats show how many words were removed and the character counts before and after. Click Copy or Download to save the cleaned text. Read it through once, especially for prose, since removing every repeat can change the meaning of sentences.
How Duplicate Word Removal Works
The tool reads your text word by word, from start to finish. A word is any run of letters or numbers, including apostrophes and hyphens, so “don’t” and “long-tail” each count as one word.
In the default mode, it keeps a list of words it has already seen. The first time a word appears, it stays. Every later appearance is deleted. So “red blue red green blue” becomes “red blue green”.
After removing words, it tidies the spacing. Double spaces left behind are collapsed into one, and spaces left before punctuation such as commas and full stops are removed. Line breaks are left as they are.
In consecutive mode, it looks only for a word followed directly by the same word, separated by spaces or line breaks. “This is is a test” becomes “This is a test”, but “the cat and the dog” stays the same, because the two “the”s are not next to each other.
Numbers count as words too, so repeated numbers are removed in the default mode. Punctuation and symbols are never removed.
Case Sensitivity and Punctuation Options
Ignore case on is the right choice for most lists. Keyword exports and tag sets often contain the same term with different capitals, like “WordPress” and “wordpress”. With ignore case on, the first version is kept and later ones are removed.
Ignore case off treats words with different capitals as different. Use it when case matters, for example product codes, variable names or proper nouns that share spelling with common words, like “Mark” and “mark”.
Consecutive mode always matches regardless of case, so “The the” is caught at the start of a sentence.
Punctuation is not part of a word. “tools,” and “tools” are the same word, so the second is removed and the comma that followed it stays. That means comma separated lists can end up with stray commas, like “seo, , tools”. For lists, it is usually cleaner to put one item per line first, or use the Comma Separator with Remove duplicates, which works on whole items instead of single words.
Deduplicating Keyword Lists and Tags
When you combine keyword lists from several tools, the same words repeat constantly. The duplicate word remover helps in two ways:
- Seed word extraction. Paste a list of keyword phrases and remove every duplicate word to get the unique vocabulary. “seo tools free, free seo checker, seo audit tools” becomes the set of unique words: seo, tools, free, checker, audit. That is handy for building seed lists or a Keyword Combiner input.
- Tag clean-up. Space separated tag lists, such as hashtags or meta keywords, often repeat. Removing duplicates keeps each tag once.
Note that this works on single words, not phrases. If you want to keep phrases like “seo tools” intact and only remove repeated phrases, put one phrase per line and use the Duplicate Line Remover instead.
Duplicate Words vs Duplicate Lines
These are two different jobs, and choosing the wrong tool is the most common mistake.
| Duplicate word remover | Duplicate line remover | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Single words | Whole lines |
| “seo tools” and “seo audit” | Removes the second “seo” | Keeps both lines |
| Best for | Unique word lists, typo fixes, tags | Keyword lists, URL lists, emails |
| Keeps phrases intact | No | Yes |
If your text is a list with one item per line and you want each item once, use the line remover. If you want each individual word once, or you want to fix repeated words in writing, use this tool.
For prose, the default mode is usually too aggressive, because normal writing repeats words like “the”, “and” and “is” all the time. Use consecutive mode for writing, and the default mode for lists of words.
