FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP

This extra spaces remover cleans up messy whitespace in any text. It collapses double and multiple spaces into one, trims spaces from the start and end of every line, turns tabs and non-breaking spaces into normal spaces, and squeezes runs of blank lines down to one. Paste text copied from PDFs, web pages, Word documents, emails or spreadsheets and get clean, consistent text back instantly. Each fix can be switched on or off, and everything runs in your browser.

How to Use the Extra Spaces Remover

Paste, check the options and copy.

Step 1: Enter or paste your input

Paste your text into the Input text box. It can be a paragraph, a whole article, a list, code comments or a column copied from a spreadsheet. Line breaks are kept, so your paragraphs and lists stay in shape. Clear empties the box.

Step 2: Choose your options

All five options are on by default:

  • Collapse multiple spaces: turns two or more spaces in a row into one.
  • Trim each line: removes spaces and tabs at the start and end of every line.
  • Collapse blank lines: reduces three or more line breaks in a row to a single blank line between paragraphs.
  • Tabs → spaces: replaces each tab with a space.
  • Non-breaking spaces → spaces: replaces invisible non-breaking spaces with normal ones.

Turn off any option you do not want. For example, untick Trim each line if you need to keep indentation.

Step 3: Copy, download or apply the result

The cleaned text appears as you type, with the number of characters removed and the input and output character counts. Click Copy or Download to save it as a text file, then paste it back into your document, CMS, spreadsheet or code.

What Counts as Extra Whitespace

Extra whitespace is any space, tab or blank line that is not needed to separate words, lines or paragraphs. Typical examples are double spaces between words, spaces at the start or end of lines, tabs used for alignment and long gaps of empty lines.

It usually comes from copying and pasting. PDFs are the worst offenders, because they position text visually and often insert extra spaces between words or at line ends. Web pages add non-breaking spaces and indentation from their HTML. Word documents carry tabs and double spaces after full stops. Spreadsheets add trailing spaces to cells.

Whitespace looks harmless, but it causes real problems:

  • Search and matching fail, because “seo tools” and “seo tools” are different strings.
  • Spreadsheet lookups break when a cell has a trailing space.
  • Character counts and meta tag lengths come out wrong.
  • Published content looks uneven, with odd gaps.

The tool also trims whitespace from the very beginning and end of the whole text, so there is nothing hidden before the first word or after the last.

Double Spaces, Tabs and Non-Breaking Spaces

Double spaces are often a habit from typewriter days, when people put two spaces after a full stop. Modern style guides, including AP and Chicago, recommend one. HTML also collapses multiple spaces when displaying a page, but they stay in the source and in any plain text output.

Tabs are invisible but count as one character. They are used for indentation and alignment in documents and code, and they come along when you copy from spreadsheets, where tabs separate columns. Converting them to spaces makes text consistent. If you are cleaning spreadsheet data where tabs separate columns, turn this option off, or each row will lose its columns.

Non-breaking spaces (Unicode U+00A0,   in HTML) look exactly like normal spaces but prevent a line break between two words. Web pages, Word and Google Docs insert them often. They cause silent problems: find and replace misses them, word counts can be off, and some systems treat them as a different character. The tool replaces them with regular spaces so everything behaves normally.

Trimming Leading and Trailing Spaces

Leading spaces sit at the start of a line, and trailing spaces at the end. You usually cannot see them, which is exactly why they cause trouble.

Common problems they create:

  • Lists and imports. An email address with a trailing space can be rejected by a mailing tool, and a keyword with a leading space may be treated as a different keyword.
  • Code and config files. Trailing whitespace creates noisy diffs in Git. In YAML and Python, leading spaces are meaningful, so be careful.
  • Markdown. Two trailing spaces at the end of a line create a line break, which may be unwanted.

Trim each line handles all of this in one go. When you need to keep indentation, for example in code, poems or nested lists, untick it. The other options still work, but Collapse multiple spaces also shortens indentation, so untick that too if indentation must stay exactly as it was.

Whitespace Issues in Excel, Code and CMS Content

Excel and Google Sheets. Trailing spaces are the most common reason VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP fail to find matches. Excel’s TRIM function removes extra spaces, but not non-breaking spaces from web data, which need SUBSTITUTE(A1,CHAR(160)," ") first. With this tool, paste the column, keep Tabs → spaces off if you have multiple columns, and paste the cleaned values back.

Code. Trailing whitespace and mixed tabs and spaces cause style warnings and messy diffs. For code, untick Trim each line and Collapse multiple spaces to keep indentation, or use a formatter for the language instead.

WordPress and other CMS editors. Text pasted from Word or PDFs often brings double spaces and non-breaking spaces that create uneven gaps or odd line wrapping. Clean the text here before pasting into the editor. If you are pasting HTML, use the HTML to Text Converter first to strip tags.

Pro Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

Checklist of best practices

  • Clean text before pasting it into your CMS.
  • Turn off Tabs → spaces for tab-separated data.
  • Turn off trimming for code or indented content.
  • Check the output character count for meta titles and descriptions.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

  • Spreadsheet columns merged. Tabs were converted. Untick Tabs → spaces and redo it.
  • Indentation lost. Trim each line and Collapse multiple spaces were on. Untick both.
  • Lines joined together. This tool keeps line breaks. If lines are broken in the middle of sentences, use the Line Break Remover.
  • Gaps still visible. The text may contain other invisible characters, like zero-width spaces. Retype the affected part.

To remove double spaces from text, paste it into the extra spaces remover with Collapse multiple spaces switched on. Every run of two or more spaces becomes a single space. The tool can also trim line ends and convert tabs and non-breaking spaces at the same time. Then copy the cleaned text.

A non-breaking space is a special space character, U+00A0 or   in HTML, that looks like a normal space but stops a line from breaking between two words. Web pages and word processors add them often. They can break find and replace, matching and counts, so it helps to convert them to normal spaces.

To trim spaces in Excel, use the TRIM function, such as =TRIM(A1), which removes leading, trailing and repeated spaces. It does not remove non-breaking spaces from web data, so wrap it with SUBSTITUTE(A1,CHAR(160),” “) first. Alternatively, paste the column into an extra spaces remover, clean it and paste it back.

No, the extra spaces remover keeps your line breaks, so paragraphs and lists stay intact. It only shortens long runs of blank lines to a single empty line if Collapse blank lines is on. To join broken lines into paragraphs or put everything on one line, use the Line Break Remover on FHSEO Hub instead.

Text gets extra spaces after copying because the source used them for layout. PDFs position words visually and often add spaces, web pages include indentation and non-breaking spaces, and Word documents may contain tabs and double spaces after full stops. Pasting carries all of that over, which is why cleaning text first helps.
