FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP
This HowTo schema generator builds HowTo structured data in JSON-LD for tutorials, guides and step-by-step instructions. Enter a title, your steps and any tools, supplies, time and cost, and it produces a clean script block you can paste straight into your page. It’s free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Just know before you start that Google no longer shows HowTo rich results, so this markup is about describing your content clearly rather than winning a special search feature.
How to Use the HowTo Schema Generator
Step 1 – Enter your how-to details
Add the How-to title, which is required, and a short Description. Enter the Total time in minutes; the tool converts it to the ISO 8601 format that schema expects, so 45 becomes PT45M. Add an Estimated cost and an Image URL if they apply. The cost is output in USD, so change the currency code in the code if you need another.
Step 2 – Choose your options
List Supplies (things used up, like paint or screws) and Tools (things you keep, like a drill), one per line. Then fill in the steps. Each has a Step name, Instructions and an optional Image URL. Three step rows are ready to start; use + Add step for more.
Step 3 – Copy, download or apply the result
The JSON-LD updates as you type, with steps numbered in order. Click Copy or Download, paste the <script> block into your page and check it with the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org. Google’s Rich Results Test no longer checks HowTo markup.
What HowTo Structured Data Describes
HowTo structured data is Schema.org markup that describes a set of instructions for completing a task: the goal, the ordered steps, and the tools, supplies, time and cost involved. It turns a tutorial into labelled, machine-readable data.
That matters because a how-to page’s structure is easy for people to see but harder for software to be sure of. Is that numbered list the method or a list of tips? Is that item a tool or an ingredient? HowTo markup answers those questions directly. Each step is a HowToStep with a position and text, the whole process has a totalTime, and equipment is listed separately.
HowTo is meant for genuine instructions that end in a result, like fixing a tap, setting up software or building a shelf. Recipes have their own, more specific type, so use the Recipe Schema Generator for food.
HowToStep, HowToTool and HowToSupply Explained
| Type | What it represents | Example |
|---|---|---|
| HowTo | The whole set of instructions | “How to repaint a door” |
| HowToStep | One action, with a position, name and text | “Sand the surface lightly” |
| HowToTool | An item used but not consumed | Paintbrush, sandpaper block |
| HowToSupply | An item used up during the task | Primer, paint, masking tape |
| totalTime | How long the whole task takes | PT2H or PT45M |
| estimatedCost | What the task costs to complete | 25 USD |
Write each step’s instructions so they make sense on their own, without relying on images or the previous paragraph. Keep step names short. Most steps benefit from one clear sentence, or two at most.
Google’s 2023 HowTo Rich Result Change
In 2023 Google changed how it uses HowTo markup. First it limited HowTo rich results to desktop, then it stopped showing them altogether. The same announcement restricted FAQ rich results to a small group of authoritative government and health sites, and in May 2026 Google stopped showing FAQ rich results altogether.
So if you add HowTo markup today, you won’t get the step-by-step rich result that used to appear in Google. The Rich Results Test no longer lists HowTo as an eligible rich result type, and Search Console dropped its HowTo report. Use the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org to check the syntax.
Google didn’t say HowTo markup is harmful. It’s simply not used for a visual feature in Google Search any more. Leaving existing markup in place won’t hurt your rankings.
Where HowTo Markup Still Adds Value
Even without a Google rich result, HowTo markup can still be worth adding:
- Clear entity data: structured steps describe your content precisely for any system that reads Schema.org, including other search engines and AI tools that parse pages.
- Content discipline: filling in tools, supplies, time and steps makes you check that the tutorial is actually complete.
- Future flexibility: if any platform starts using HowTo data again, your pages are ready.
- Internal consistency: sites with many tutorials can keep a standard structure across them.
If time is short, prioritise markup types that still produce Google features, such as Article, Breadcrumb, Product or Video, and add HowTo where it’s easy.

Pro Tips and Mistakes to Avoid
Checklist of best practices
- Mark up only instructions that are visible on the page, in the same order.
- Write every step as a complete instruction someone could follow.
- Separate tools from supplies correctly.
- Use realistic time and cost estimates.
- Validate with the Schema Markup Validator before publishing.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
- Marking up recipes as HowTo: use Recipe schema instead.
- Steps that only say “See image”: add text to each step.
- Expecting a rich result: Google no longer shows one, so judge the markup on clarity, not clicks.
- Duplicate markup: check your SEO plugin isn’t already outputting HowTo blocks.
