XML Formatter & Minifier

Result

FREE TOOL · NO SIGN-UP

This XML formatter makes any XML document readable in seconds. Paste your XML and it checks that the document is well-formed, then either beautifies it with clean indentation or minifies it into a single compact line. It’s useful for developers working with APIs and config files, and for SEOs checking XML sitemaps and RSS feeds.

What an XML Formatter Does

XML stores data as nested elements, attributes and text. When it’s generated by software it often arrives as one enormous line, and finding a single <url> entry or a broken tag by eye is close to impossible. An XML formatter lays that structure out so you can read it.

Formatting and well-formedness checks

When you paste XML, the tool runs it through your browser’s built-in XML parser. If the document parses, you’ll see a Well-formed XML ✓ message and the formatted output. If it doesn’t, you’ll see Invalid XML followed by the parser’s description of the problem, which usually points to the element or line where things went wrong.

In Beautify mode each element goes on its own line, children are indented under their parent, and elements that only contain text stay on one line, like <loc>https://example.com/</loc>. Empty elements are written in short form, such as <item/>. The XML declaration at the top, attributes, CDATA sections and processing instructions are all kept.

Validation against XSD

Well-formed and valid aren’t the same thing. Well-formed means the XML follows the basic syntax rules: one root element, properly nested and closed tags, quoted attributes. Valid means it also matches a schema, such as an XSD file, that defines which elements and values are allowed.

This tool checks well-formedness only. It doesn’t load or test against an XSD. For schema validation, use an XML editor or a command-line validator with the schema file. For sitemaps, Google Search Console will also report problems after you submit.

How to Format XML

Step 1 – Paste your XML

Paste the document into the XML box. You can copy it from a file, an API response, your browser’s view of sitemap.xml or a feed URL. The tool works live, so the result appears as soon as you paste.

Step 2 – Choose indentation

Set Action to Beautify and pick an Indent of 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab. To shrink the file instead, set Action to Minify. That removes indentation, line breaks and comments.

Step 3 – Fix reported errors

If you see an Invalid XML message, read it carefully. It usually names a mismatched tag, an unexpected character or an unclosed element. Fix the problem in your source, paste again and repeat until you get the well-formed confirmation.

Step 4 – Copy or download

Use Copy to grab the output or Download to save formatted.xml. The stats bar shows input and output character counts, which is a quick way to see how much minifying saves.

Common XML Errors

Most broken XML comes down to a handful of mistakes, and the parser message usually points straight at them.

Unclosed or mismatched tags

Every opening tag needs a matching closing tag, and tags must close in the reverse order they opened. <a><b></a></b> is invalid because <b> is still open when <a> closes. XML is also case sensitive, so <Item> and </item> don’t match. A missing closing tag near the end of a long file is a classic cause of “unexpected end of document” errors.

Unescaped & and <

The ampersand and the less-than sign have special meaning in XML. A raw & in a URL query string, like ?a=1&b=2, breaks parsing. Write it as &amp; instead. A literal < inside text must be written as &lt;. This catches out many sitemaps built from URLs with parameters. Our HTML Entity Encoder / Decoder can escape these characters for you.

Formatting SEO XML Files

Sitemaps and feeds

XML sitemaps and RSS or Atom feeds are XML documents, so they follow the same rules. Formatting a sitemap makes it easy to check that each <url> has a correct <loc>, that <lastmod> dates look sensible and that nothing unexpected has slipped in. If your sitemap shows errors in Search Console, paste it here first to rule out basic syntax problems. To build a new one, try our XML Sitemap Generator.

Checking namespaces

Sitemaps and feeds declare namespaces with xmlns attributes on the root element. Image, video and news sitemap extensions add their own prefixes, such as image:. If you use a prefixed element without declaring its namespace, the document isn’t well-formed and the parser will flag it. Formatting puts the root element and its declarations at the very top, so missing ones are easy to spot.

XML vs JSON for Data Exchange

When XML still wins

JSON is the default for most modern web APIs, but XML is still standard in sitemaps, RSS, SOAP services, office file formats, SVG graphics and many enterprise and government systems. XML handles mixed content, attributes and formal schemas well, which matters for documents and strict data contracts.

Converting between them

Converting XML to JSON isn’t always one-to-one, because JSON has no direct equivalent of attributes, namespaces or mixed text. Converters make choices, such as prefixing attribute names, that you need to understand before relying on the output. If you work with both, the JSON Formatter & Minifier handles the JSON side.

XML Formatting Pitfalls

Whitespace in mixed content

The formatter trims surrounding whitespace from text and drops whitespace-only text between elements. That’s ideal for data files, but in document-style XML where spacing between inline elements matters, check the result.

Encoding mismatches

If the declaration says UTF-8 but the file was saved in another encoding, special characters can turn into garbage. Make sure the declared encoding matches the real one. Note that a DOCTYPE line isn’t carried into the output.

Pasting sensitive payloads

API responses can contain personal data or tokens. The tool runs in your browser and doesn’t upload anything, but remove sensitive values before sharing formatted output.

Read and Fix XML in Seconds

Readable XML saves time every time a sitemap fails, a feed breaks or an API returns something unexpected. Use the XML formatter to check and tidy your files, then build or update sitemaps with the XML Sitemap Generator or the Image Sitemap Generator, and format API data with the JSON Formatter & Minifier. XML Formatter & Minifier FAQs

An XML formatter is a tool that adds consistent line breaks and indentation to XML so its nested structure is easy to read. This one also checks that the XML is well-formed and can minify it. Formatting changes only whitespace, not the elements, attributes or data in the document.

XML is well-formed when it follows the core syntax rules: a single root element, every tag properly closed, tags nested in the correct order, attribute values in quotes, matching case in tag names, and special characters like `&` and `<` escaped. Any XML parser will reject a document that breaks these rules.

Well-formed XML follows XML’s general syntax rules. Valid XML is well-formed and also conforms to a specific schema, such as an XSD or DTD, that defines which elements, attributes and values are allowed. A document can be well-formed but still invalid for the system expecting it.

Yes, you can format an XML sitemap by pasting its contents into the formatter. Beautify mode puts each URL entry on separate, indented lines so you can review locations and dates, and the well-formedness check catches syntax errors like unescaped ampersands. Upload the original or minified file to your site afterward.

Minifying XML removes indentation, line breaks and, in this tool, comments. The elements, attributes and text values stay the same, so software reading the file gets the same data. The one exception is documents where whitespace inside text is meaningful, so check mixed-content files before replacing them.
